In an increasingly complex global security landscape, air cargo has emerged as a critical vulnerability in the transportation network. The rise of asymmetric threats has significantly elevated the risk profile for air freight. Cargo supply chains are particularly susceptible due to their complex, multi-stakeholder nature, which creates numerous potential points of compromise. To address these vulnerabilities, implementing rigorous end-to-end security protocols aligned with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and International Air Transport Association (IATA) standards is crucial. These established frameworks recommend a comprehensive approach known as the Secure Freight Model, which emphasizes creating a secure supply chain through multiple layers of verification and screening. This model includes key strategies such as known consignor programs, advanced screening technologies, risk-based targeting, and mandatory chain-of-custody documentation. By mandating that cargo be validated and monitored from its point of origin through transit and final delivery, these processes can significantly mitigate the risk of potential security breaches. Furthermore, integrating advanced technologies like AI-powered risk assessment, advanced X-ray and chemical detection systems can provide real-time security intelligence and reduce the likelihood of adverse incidents.
